    Insight, A Study of Human Understanding. [REVIEW]J. R. A. - 1958 - Review of Metaphysics 11 (3):516-516.
Father Lonergan, Professor at the Gregorian University in Rome, writes from the conviction that by thoroughly understanding what it is to understand, one will understand the structure of all that is and can be understood. Focussing on insight, the very essence of understanding, Father Lonergan examines illustrations of insight in mathematics, science, common sense, etc., in order to bring the reader to an insight into insight. The sometimes annoyingly prolix discussion is intended to enable the reader to grasp within his (...)

Richard Price and the Ethical Foundations of the American Revolution; Selections from his pamphlets, with appendices. [REVIEW]J. R. A. - 1979 - Review of Metaphysics 33 (1):195-196.
Richard Price is remembered mainly for his work in moral philosophy, A Review of the Principal Questions and Difficulties in Morals. He also wrote widely and effectively on the political and economic problems of his time; he contributed with rare distinction to the polemical pamphlet literature which surrounded the America revolution. He was devoted to the American cause, and he analyzed and attacked British policies not only on grounds of utility but also in consideration of rationally apprehended natural rights. In (...)

    Reason and Belief. [REVIEW]J. R. A. - 1978 - Review of Metaphysics 32 (1):127-128.
The final volume in Blanshard’s trilogy in defense of reason. While the two earlier volumes, Reason and Analysis and Reason and Goodness, are devoted to the roles of reason in knowledge and morality, respectively, Reason and Belief focuses on reason in regard to religion, confined, however, to Christianity. Blanshard’s method is primarily critical; the bulk of his writings consists of the critique and demolition of views on reason, reality, and values which differ from his own. On the constructive side, Blanshard’s (...)

    The Philosophy of the American Revolution. [REVIEW]J. R. A. - 1979 - Review of Metaphysics 32 (3):572-573.
An outgrowth of the Bicentennial. White examines the metaphysics, epistemology, and moral philosophy which influenced American revolutionary thought. Focusing on the doctrines of self-evident truth and natural law expressed in the Declaration of Independence, he elucidates them by erudite explications and critical analyses of such 17th and 18th century thinkers as John Locke, Francis Hutcheson, and Jean Jacques Burlamaqui. Traditional interpretations, best represented by Carl Becker’s The Declaration of Independence, have stressed the role of Locke. More recently, intellectual historians have (...)

    Inventing America. [REVIEW]J. R. A. - 1979 - Review of Metaphysics 32 (3):573-574.
A major new interpretation of the Declaration of Independence and of the philosophical background of Thomas Jefferson at the time of its composition. Garry Wills attempts to reconstruct the intellectual atmosphere in the 18th century, and by attending to Jefferson’s draft of the Declaration in comparison with the revised draft adopted by Congress, he seeks to show that Jefferson was deeply influenced in his thought and phrasing not by John Locke, as the standing interpretation of Carl Becker holds, but by (...)

    Tunneling as a Classical Escape Rate Induced by the Vacuum Zero-point Radiation.A. J. Faria, H. M. França & R. C. Sponchiado - 2006 - Foundations of Physics 36 (2):307-320.
We make a brief review of the Kramers escape rate theory for the probabilistic motion of a particle in a potential well U(x), and under the influence of classical fluctuation forces. The Kramers theory is extended in order to take into account the action of the thermal and zero-point random electromagnetic fields on a charged particle. The result is physically relevant because we get a non-null escape rate over the potential barrier at low temperatures (T → 0). It is found (...)

    Enactive Music Cognition: Background and Research Themes.J. R. Matyja & A. Schiavio - 2013 - Constructivist Foundations 8 (3):351-357.
Context: The past few years have presented us with a growing amount of theoretical research (yet that is often based on neuroscientific developments) in the field of enactive music cognition. Problem: Current cognitivist and embodied approaches to music cognition suffer, in our opinion, from a too firm commitment to the explanatory role of mental representations in musical experience. This particular problem can be solved by adopting an enactive approach to music cognition. Method: We present and compare cognitivist, embodied and enactive (...)

Morgan has argued that attitudes to the medicalisation of sports are historically conditioned. While the history of doping offers contested versions of when the sports world turned againstconservative forces, Morgan has argued that these attitudes are out of step with prevailingnorms and that the World Anti Doping Agency's policy needs to be modified to better reflectthis. As an advocate of critical democracies in sports, he argues that anti-doping policy mustacknowledge and reflect these shifts in order to secure their legitimacy. In response, (...)

    Towards a Theory of Taxation*: J. R. LUCAS.J. R. Lucas - 1984 - Social Philosophy and Policy 2 (1):161-173.
“Towards a Theory of Taxation” is a proper theme for an Englishman to take when giving a paper in America. After all it was from the absence of such a theory that the United States derived its existence. The Colonists felt strongly that there should be no taxation without representation, and George III was unable to explain to them convincingly why they should contribute to the cost of their defense. Since that time, understanding has not advanced much. In Britain we (...)

This paper responds to Antje du-Bois Pedain’s discussion of the wrongfulness constraint on the criminal law. Du-Bois Pedain argues that the constraint is best interpreted as stating that φing is legitimately criminalised only if φing is wrongful for other-regarding reasons. We take issue with du-Bois Pedain’s arguments. In our view, it is neither a necessary nor sufficient condition of legitimate criminalisation that φing is wrongful in du-Bois Pedain’s sense. Rather, it is a necessary condition of legitimate criminalisation that φing is (...)

    Compact quantum systems and the Pauli data problem.A. J. Bracken & R. J. B. Fawcett - 1993 - Foundations of Physics 23 (2):277-289.
Compact quantum systems have underlying compact kinematical Lie algebras, in contrast to familiar noncompact quantum systems built on the Weyl-Heisenberg algebra. Pauli asked in the latter case: to what extent does knowledge of the probability distributions in coordinate and momentum space determine the state vector? The analogous question for compact quantum systems is raised, and some preliminary results are obtained.

This paper examines the identity of Asian swamp buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) from different value orientations. Buffalo were introduced into Northern (Top End) Australia in the early nineteenth century. A team of transdisciplinary researchers, including an ethicist, has been engaged in field research on feral buffalo in Arnhem Land over the past three years. Using historical documents, literature review, field observations, interviews with key informants, and interaction with the Indigenous land owners, an understanding of the diverse views on the scientific, cultural, (...)

    Gender, Work-Family Responsibilities, and Sleep.Anthony R. Bardo, Rachel A. Sebastian & David J. Maume - 2010 - Gender and Society 24 (6):746-768.
This study adds to a small but growing literature that situates sleep within gendered work— family responsibilities. We conducted interviews with 25 heterosexual dual-earner working-class couples with children, most of whom had one partner who worked at night. A few men suffered disrupted sleep because of their commitment to being a coparent to their children, but for most their provider status gave them rights to longer and more continuous sleep. By contrast, as they were the primary caregiver during sentient hours, (...)

BackgroundPrenatal and early postnatal choline supplementation reduces cognitive and behavioral deficits in animal models of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. In a previously published 9-month clinical trial of choline supplementation in children with FASD, we reported that postnatal choline was associated with improved performance on a hippocampal-dependent recognition memory task. The current paper describes the neurophysiological correlates of that memory performance for trial completers.MethodsChildren with FASD who were enrolled in a clinical trial of choline supplementation were followed for 9 months. 37. Teaching clinical medical ethics: a model programme for primary care residency.R. M. Arnold, L. Forrow, S. A. Wartman & J. Teno - 1988 - Journal of Medical Ethics 14 (2):91-96.
Few residency training programmes explicitly require substantive exposure to issues in medical ethics and fewer still have a formal curriculum in this area. Traditional undergraduate medical ethics courses teach preclinical students to identify ethical issues and analyse them at a theoretical level. Residency training, however, is the ideal time to establish the critical behavioural link which makes ethics truly useful in clinical medicine. The General Internal Medicine Residency Training Program at Rhode Island Hospital has developed an integrated, three-year curriculum with (...)
